Boosting Your Immune System

A word about COVID-19 and OakwayNaturals...

In these times of staying at home, social distancing, and avoiding handshakes and hugs, we will continue to do our best to help you to stay healthy. While the COVID-19 pandemic continues through the winter in the United States, we have seen a large increase in orders (and temporarily unavailable products) as people are stocking up and boosting their immune system. We want to remind you that the best way to stay healthy begins with:

  • Wash your hands - with soap and water at least 20 seconds

The Corona Virus has a lipid (fatty) exterior that breaks down and is killed with soap
  • Maintain your distance

Studies have shown that a 6 foot (2 meter) distance between you and someone else prevents the spread of airborne droplets that are in someone else's breath. Also avoid gyms, yoga studios, waiting rooms (salons) and other places where others have spent time. There is evidence the virus can live on smooth surfaces for a couple of days if uncleaned.
  • Avoid touching your face

Illnesses can be contracted by touching your eyes, mouth, or nose. This is very difficult for some, especially if doing so is a habit for you. Practice holding onto something -- a clutch, pencil, coffee mug, as that will distract you from touching your face. If you must touch your face, wash your hands first.
  • Stay hydrated

Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. Soups, fruits, and vegetables contain mostly water so these can be counted as partial glasses of water as well.
  • Stay fit!

Keep your exercise plan. Since you can't go to the gym, go for a walk or run. However, if you take your dog with you, don't allow others to pet your dog because virus on their hands will stay on your dog's fur. Develop your home exercise plan -- work on those abs and core muscles!
  • A word about face masks...

This virus seems to be carried by people who don't know they even have it. It is for this reason, that the CDC has recommended that all persons wear masks or cloth over their nose & mouth in public to protect the others around you, just in case you might have been exposed and are not showing any symptoms. After all, those who are the healthiest seem to show no or few symptoms.
  • Treatments for this horrible disease.

Remdesivir, Azithromycin, hydroxychloroquine, protease inhibitors (Lopinavir/Retonavir), zinc, convalescent immunoglobulins, L-glutathione, and vitamin D are all drugs or supplements based upon extrapolations of data from related conditions, or in vitro studies, or observational, retrospective, anecdotal experiences, or solely based on expert opinion. While many new therapeutics have been developed, the best course of action if you think you may have been exposed to the virus is to call your healthcare practitioner to find out what options are available and what's right for you. Please consult your healthcare practitioner immediately if you believe you have been subjected to the COVID-19 virus! The vaccine is coming -- we can get through this together.

Vitamin C & Other Antioxidants

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, became known as an immune boosting antioxidant after two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling suggested in his books in the 1970s, that it would not only reduce the duration of the common cold, but prevent it and other viral diseases altogether by boosting the immune system. Resveratrol and quercetin are other strong antioxidants known to support the immune system.

Zinc is known to aid the body's immune system by fighting off invading bacteria and viruses. Studies show that older people and children who have low levels of zinc may have a higher risk of getting pneumonia and other infections. Some studies even suggest that zinc lozenges or syrup help speed the recovery from the common cold and reduce symptoms if taken within 24 hours of the first sign of a cold.
